Yes weightlifting is to help you get stronger, but physiologically, weight training is one of the best activities for reversing diabetes. Your insulin attaches to a certain protein on muscle cells called GLUT-4 proteins. When your body has ample amounts of these proteins, your blood sugar is more efficient. Every time you lift weights, your body produces more of these proteins, so lifting weights can actually have a diabetes reversing effect.
